A SCAR OF OPPORTUNITY

Year 2020 has been a year like no other. It presented the world with a unique combination of challenges. Our world became new while we were completely unprepared for it. Our lives have become much smaller than we could've imagined. Our once-familiar everyday life continues to change.

The CoVid-19 pandemic, along with the societal disputes and environmental concerns, has been a huge part in reshaping our lives. Also, it has proven that, when deemed necessary, the governing powers can implement massive changes to our day-to-day realities in a matter of hours. Like how the lockdown was quickly enforced for our protection and safety, which, on the other hand, forced us to get comfortable with our limitations. While the lockdown made some people world-weary, others considered it a great chance to start their own adventure through creativity and imagination. I'm one of those in the latter case. I got myself into a new hobby- writing. Aside from being therapeutic, it also allows me to explore possibilities and realities. Writing has introduced me to challenges and questions that gives me an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and think outside the box. One of those is how I imagine the future- life in 2050??

Well, personally, I strongly believe that the year 2050 is still far from the hyper-futuristic year where cars fly. Kidding aside, I believe that life in 2050 is more bearable and easier in a more harmonious and united setting. I believe so because of the undeniably indispensable adjustments and shifts that've occurred during this global pandemic.

Despite the hardship we're facing today, the virus somehow helped us to figure out how to be more compassionate and sociable: when the CoVid-19 broke out, there was xenophobia outbreak, too... some people treated China and its people with the language of hate- anger and disgust. But then, few months later, due to the severity of the pandemic, pathos took place of denunciation... people started to understand and practice acceptance and respect.

The pandemic also caused sudden increase on mental health-related cases especially anxiety and depression. Fortunately, there are some organizations that took initiative to shine their light. A lot of them uses social media thru different communication applications where they enlighten, share information and spread awareness about mental health. In fact, many groups came out and offered open invitations so that people have an idea on how to express themselves not just thru conversation but thru other mediums such as arts, literature, music photography, sports and many more. Mental health organizations' help and presence is a symbol of grace and hope to many. And so it would be a helpful social innovation to modernize mental health connections, dealings and communications among persons or groups.

Personally, I was surprised how being sympathetic became our second nature. It's amazing to discover the remarkable human ability to deal with terrible things such as disease, fear and restrictions. Indeed, the pandemic turned our attitudes, lives and perspectives around. And so for that, I do believe that these changes will stay in our hearts... along with all the pains that came along with it, and the beauty and strength that has helped us rise from difficulties. Indeed, lessons learned the hard way has lasting touch. I hope you'll let all the knowledge and moral gained from this global pandemic be an inspiration for you to make an impact or a masterpiece that stands for something you believe in from this very moment to the future.

As I continue to write this piece, my mind moved me to include this humble request and idea regarding some of the most common concerns of the youths even before the CoVid-19 pandemic- inclusion and recognition- some of the things that are only given to few:

Each generation has its own heroes-from the business and entertainment industry, politics, and many more- where young people are mostly involved. Indeed, youths have been, still are and for sure will always be, the hope of our Nation. Thus acknowledging them and their needs will surely keep the yore saying a constant reminder for them to do their part- work on solutions together. So why not give them a boost by providing EQUAL opportunities and investing more on youth organizations??

Now, more than ever, is the time to recognize others' potential instead of placing anybody in a box because of their age, looks and status. Invest on the youths no matter where they're from and who they are. Equality resolves social conflicts to enhance social interactions that stimulate social developments. Show the youths favor and give them freedom to share their beliefs. Because belief is the foundation of change. Beliefs matter. Change matters. Youths matter.

Life in 2050 may be far different from the way how I imagine it, and I'm not that sure if I came out brash with my opinion and suggestion about the concerns for youths, but one thing I know is certain, we're stronger and tougher than the CoVid-19. This too shall pass. We've been standing longer than the pandemic, we've faced and overcame many battles and storms before, so believe that we're gonna be just fine.

And while the CoVid-19 is still around, I hope that we continue to work through the pain. This year God made us all strong. Next year, God will make us all happy. Believe it, claim it. But for now, keep the faith. Fight a good fight. And finish the race.
