Demonic Forces Chapter 1 {E1}

"Demonssss. Demonssss. Demonssss!" The voice hissed, over and over in the inky blackness. I couldn't see anything, I never could.

A more human voice spoke up, "Lily... You're a-"

My alarm went off. I groaned as I sat up, the voice was cut off as usual. As much as I hated that stupid nightmare, I'd been having it for months. If I was practically going to be harassed by it, I'd like to know what it meant.

I smacked the alarm, almost breaking another one. This was my third alarm clock in the past six months. And the third time I'd had that dream in the past week.

Even though I didn't have to wake up for school I still didn't want to get out of my sweet, sweet bed. I had to go run errands. Even better.

As I got ready I pondered what route I'd take. In the end I decided to leave that up to my driver, who's also my best and only friend.

I checked myself in the mirror when I was ready. I didn't care what Jasper thought, but you never knew who you'd meet. That was my from belief, at least.

I ran out to the car, almost forgetting the pepper spray that my dad forced me to carry around. The perks of living in a big city like Chicago.

"You look as sarcastic as ever," Jasper murmured as he started the car.

I quirked an eyebrow at him, "How the heck do you look sarcastic?"

He started to drive. "By looking like you?"

Well," I began, "don't say something controversial if you don't have a good answer."

"You had the dream again?"

I crossed my arms over my chest and looked at myself in the side view mirror. If there was such a thing I guess I did look sarcastic.

My eyebrows were knitted into a scowl and my green eyes were dull and furious. My black hair was pulled back into a shiny ponytail, adding to it. Since it was chilly out I had on a grey hoodie, jeans, and matching grey high tops.

I also snuck a look at Jasper, looking as laid back as ever.

People thought we were either siblings or dating. We both had black hair but he had sparkling blue eyes. He had a sharp face and looked frightening, tall and muscular. I was rather petite but still considered attractive.

Another thing alike was that we each had piercings. Not many though. Jasper only had a piercing in one ear while I had two in each, at least. Therefore, we were labeled as freaks with no friends.

"Where to first?" Jasper asked as we pulled up the the end of my neighborhood.

I shrugged, "I guess first we need to go to my grandmothers?"

"That's all the way across town!" He exclaimed, "What could your dad possibly need there?"

"Some sort of package," I said. As I scanned the list I saw something else peculiar. "There's something he needs you to specifically grab. Says for me not to go near it."

"What are you allergic to?" He mused. I shook my head.

I scanned the list again, "Nothing."

He started to tap the steering wheel, "What is it?"

"Another package."

"From where?"

I looked again, "My dad's friend. His name is Calvin and he's a priest. I've met him once or twice."

"Please tell me he lives by your grandma?" I nodded and he grinned.

We arrived at my grandmothers within a few minutes. She didn't hesitate to give us the package and shoo us on with our errands, right after shoving a box of brownies along with us.

"You hold the stuff, I have to drive," Jasper commented, throwing the boxes into my lap. I responded by snagging a browning and throwing them in the back seat.

"After Mr. Calvin's house we have to pick up a few things from the market," I said. Jasper nodded, he was too focused on driving.

When we got to the house we did the same. Calvin was more serious, glaring at me like he wanted nothing to do with me. Even through the windshield.

Jasper jumped into the car, "We are picking up popcorn at the grocery store and watching a movie at your place because you owe me."

He threw the box onto my lap and I shrieked, "Get it off me, get off me, get it off me! It's burning me!"

I knocked the box off my lap and onto the floor, hitting it with the back of my hand.

"What the h*ll?" Jasper shouted. The back of my hand had a burn mark. He reached out to see what had happened.

I snatched my hand back, "I'm fine. Just go."

Jasper bit his cheek as he drove. He was obviously a little hurt but I was honestly fine. He knew I didn't like to be touched.

I was a solitary person, thanks to my mother.

It was silent the rest of the ride. We did split up to get groceries though.

Jasper smiled as he threw a box of popcorn in the cart, "Done! And we have stuff for the movie."

We checked out and were walking out when some guy in black knocked into our cart, tipping all the contents out. Jasper began to pick them up but I grabbed the guys shoulder.

"What is your problem?" I screamed.

He turned and hissed at me,barring his fanged teeth. This was no ordinary person. His face looked hollowed out and greying. There was black sludge in his mouth too.

I screamed and Jasper looked up, pulling me away. The monster started making strange hissing and clicking noises before he looked right at me and hissed, "Demonssss."

Jasper was religious and he began to murmur something. It sounded like a prayer. Before he could get even a few words out the monster sprinted away, disappearing. "Get the stuff so we can get out of here."

I helped him clean up the few remaining items, constantly checking over my shoulder. I threw the items in the car and we sped off.

"Can we just leave the stuff in the car?" I asked Jasper as we pulled onto my street.

He shook his head, "Better not."

We carried the stuff in as quickly as possible. While I was putting some food away I spoke, "Are we gonna not talk about what happened?"

"About the crazy man in a costume that scared the sh*t out of us in a moment of foggy judgement?" I nodded, "Then yes."

I nodded. When Jasper didn't want to talk he meant it. I was making the popcorn while he began to search for a movie. When I came into the living room he was holding some old superhero movie. I rolled my eyes but watched it anyways.

Jasper was a sucker for anything like this. I said he was my undercover nerd and he called me his average intelligence sidekick. I may or may not have punched him.

Another thing was is that he didn't look it but Jasper was actually the smart one. He made all As and was in advanced classes. He was guaranteed to get in a good college where I wasn't guaranteed to pass math next year, which was our senior year.

Jasper's arm was around me and my head was on his shoulder, we were also sharing a blanket. We did this a lot but we didn't have crushes on each other. I mean, the feelings have been there, but we wouldn't date. Right?

I felt my eyes getting heavy. It'd been a long day.

"Lily, wake up!" Jasper shouted.

I opened my eyes. I guess I'd fallen asleep. "Huh?"

I sat up and he said, "Your dad isn't coming... Home... For a... While so he asked me to stay here and keep you company."

"Oh shut up. He asked you to stay because he doesn't think I can take care of myself," I grumbled. He bit his cheek again. "C'mon then. Don't we need to go to your house?"

Going to Jasper's house didn't take long. His family didn't question it but I stayed in the car as he got the bag he kept packed for our sleepovers. The same old stuff.

My dad went out on business a lot. So he always called Jasper to stay with me. Jasper, the bad*ss nerd.

When we got back I sent Jasper to put his stuff in the guest room we basically called his room. My stomach also decided to growl so I started on dinner. Pasta with butter, my specialty.

Jasper came down the stairs of the small house, "I'll finish up. Your mom's calling your phone anyways. You should answer."

I snorted but didn't move. Jasper was always pushing my mom and I together but no way. He sighed and sat on the counter, pulling out silverware and bowls while I strained the pasta and added butter.

We popped in another movie while we ate. This one was a cheesy Christmas romance. Another movie for me to roll my eyes at.

About halfway through, right when things were getting good, I decided to take our plates in the kitchen. I was itching to get up and stretch.

I dumped our bowls in the sink and looked out the large window above it. Our street was lined with light and I could see some of the well known skyscrapers off in the distance, glowing in the night.

I was turning away when something in the bush caught my eyes. I couldn't see what it was, just a glint of something.

I backed off and headed towards the living room, "Jasper!" I hissed repeatedly.

"What?" He whined as he trudged into the kitchen. I pointed towards the bush and he saw it immediately. "Stay here."

I hit him on the shoulder, "Are you crazy? If you're going out there, which I advise against, I'm going with you."

He grumbled something I couldn't hear but we walked to the door he shoved me behind him in a protective manner.

We crept over to the bush. It rustled and the thing glinted again. Jasper was about to move for it when somebody shouted, "Get down!"

On instinct I hit the deck and pulled Jasper with me. A spear was thrown over our heads and into the bush where we heard a hissing sound. I rolled over to see a boy standing there.

He looked familiar, he reminded me of Jasper. He had that certain look like you didn't want to mess with him. He had the same black hair but it was a bit neater in its straight cut and was dark blue at the ends.

His eyes were a dark swirling mix of colors I couldn't even decipher, seeing greens and browns and golds amongst other colors. He had a tool belt around his waist, and he was wearing jeans. Not to mention a black button up shirt that was slightly ripped in the right sleeve, which was starting to line with blood.

I finally stopped staring at him when Jasper pulled me up. We scrambled to stand up as the boy smirked at us.

I was about to open my mouth to ask who, or even what, he was when he widened his smirk and said, "Third time's the charm."

Jasper and I looked at each other with confused expressions. This time it was Jasper who was about to speak but the boy backed off before running off down the street.

"Lily we should probably get in the house..." Jasper stuttered.

"Yeah!" I hastily agreed. We ran and scrambled into the house, Jasper even bolted the door behind us.

This had never happened before. All of a sudden we were being targeted. By... Monsters. Could it have been what my dad told us to pick up? Or to do with his business trip?

I marched towards where we'd set the packages, "Jasper, we're opening these. All of a sudden we're being targeted and I think it has to do with these packages."

He cursed before relenting, "Fine. Just let me do it. "

I nodded and he grabbed a knife from the knife block to open the package with. I peered over his shoulder as he carefully cut the tape on the box my grandma had given us. He tossed the knife on the counter with a clang, carelessly. He was the exact opposite when he opened the box.

Inside was another box.

"That's it?" I exclaimed incredulously. I roughly picked up the box, examining it.

It was heavy for its size. It was rectangular; about a foot long, half a foot wide, and only a few inches deep.

It was also practically irregularly smooth. It was made out of a black stone, reminding me of obsidian. There weren't even any signs of opening-it was really just a block.

Jasper shook his head at the box, "Whatever it is, it's caused us a lot of d*mn trouble."

I nodded before holding it up to the light in front of the window. The bush started to rustle again and I dropped it on reflex. The movement stopped.

"This is what's calling the monsters,"

I whispered. I raised it up and down a few times, toying with the creatures out there.

"Lily I wouldn't-" Jasper started. He'd stopped talking and was looking at the window. I turned to look and I caught a glimpse of a creature as Jasper pulled me back.

Another monster was clawing at the window. Its claws made sinister scratching sounds, leaving marks on the glass. This one was like nothing Id ever seen before.

It had horns and a beak but the body of a dog. It's eyes were pits, and black sludge dripped from the beak.

Then, the window shattered. Somebody pushed me onto the ground. I looked to see if not was Jasper but he was on the ground with me. I looked up to see Seth.

I held the box in my lap as I covered my head, the mystery boy had thrown something at the window before ducking by the cabinets with us. He counted to three before there was a flash of light and a screech before it was all silent.

He stood up and smirked down at us, "Told you third time's the charm. That's the rule with demon attacks."
