The Spring, A Parable
There was a man who had no water. It had not always been this way. For many years he bought drinking water in bottles from the store. He was grateful for the water store because before the owner came and opened his store, the people of the town gathered water from whatever stagnant pool they could find. For many years he was a faithful customer of the water store. Then one day the shelves were empty and the store was closed. He was devastated and did not know where he would get water. It stormed that night and he did not sleep well. In the middle of the night lightning struck the tree growing in his front yard and split it right in half. He did not sleep at after that. Now, this tree was his pride and joy. It provided him shade in Summer and the sweetest red apples in Autumn. And its leaves did not whither in the last drought. At first light he went outside. At the sight of his prize tree split right down the middle, he wanted to die. Then he saw it: a spring of water was gushing out from the base of the tree.
“On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.”

“I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.”
