Elements
Chapter 1-New town=more secrets
Kendra's POV
I am currently on a bus to my new home of Springbeach, California. The bus ride was a good 3 hours and I was kind of excited.
The bus ride was almost over and I started to gather my things. Which was a suitcase and a backpack. I got off the bus and started walking to my new orphanage. I couldn't wait to go to the beach. The amazing blue of the water. I arrive at the orphanage. It seemed pretty large. I knocked and no one answered. I knocked again and I heard whispers. I slowly opened the door and walked inside. "Hello?" No one answered. I shut the door and I was suddenly attacked. I fell down and became unconscious.
When I woke up I heard girls talking. "Are you okay?" said one of them. "I'm, I'm fine." "Thank God. We thought she killed you." "Well thanks for not but since I'm conscious now, would you like to tell me who you are." "Oh, well I'm Kara and the one who looks like is on a sugar hive is Abby." "How old are you" "I'm 15 and Abby's 8. And you are?" "I'm Kendra. And I'm 15 also." Abby started walking around me. "Hmm. Jeans, T-shirt, beanie, no make-up or nail polish. Gasp! You're a tomboy!" "I'm not a tomboy. I just don't like wearing make-up, dresses or skirts. But I do wear jewellery." I showed her my ring. "That's really pretty!," said Abby. "What kind of gemstone is that?" Asked Kara. "I don't know. My mom gave it to me." "Mermaid!" "What" I said a little freaked out. "Sorry about that" said Kara. "Abby loves mermaids. She relates everything to them. One time I wore skirt to the beach and she splashed water all over me." Abby walked over and jumped onto my lap. "Hi." She grabbed my hand and looked at my ring. She put my hand down and walked away. "Well. I'm heading to the beach. I'll see you later." I put my bags on my bed and head down to the beach.
After a few minutes of waiting for everyone to leave the water, this guy came by. "Are you okay?" "Oh I'm fine. Why?" "You're the only person here who hasn't been in the water." "Is that problem? Or is it just some cheesy way of you making an attempt to meet on me." "Little bit of both. If you don't go in the water then that's a problem because I won't be able to save you." "Well, I can take care of myself." "I've never met anyone like you." "Like what." "Sassy and sarcastic but, cute and sensitive. Are you new?" "Yeah. I just moved into the orphanage on the corner. I'm Kendra by the way." I said reaching my hand out. "Cool. I'm Jake. So about that water thing." "Yeah how about never gonna happen." "Fine. Fine I give." I guess I'll have to try another time.
I was back at the orphanage listening to some music. Everyone else was at the park 4 buildings away. I had all of these questions running through my head about these girls. I heard the doorknob turn and almost had a mini-heart attack. "Hey your back! So how was the beach." said Kara. "It was okay. I guess. Do you know a lifeguard named Jake?" "Him! Oh my god. He keeps hitting on all the girls." We talked for a while. Kara was one of the nicest girls I've ever met. But as much fun as I was having, I couldn't wait to go in the water.
It was night and everyone was asleep while I lay awake at night. The sound of the ocean just made me want to go more. No one was there so I guess I could. I quietly got dressed and snuck out. Luckily there was pole on the side of building that went to the roof. I climbed out of my window and walked to the beach. The moon wasn't full but it was still beautiful. I ran into the water feeling it run across my skin. My hair getting wet and me swimming, actually enjoying my life. I swam around for a bit and started heading out towards the island.
After what felt like a few hours, I was getting tired and started swimming back to the docks. Again, no one was out. I climbed out of the water and dried off. I started walking back to the orphanage. I walked back to my bed. Everyone was asleep. Including me.
I checked my watch as I walked into my room. It was 8. Kara was awake reading and Abby was still asleep. "Hey. Where were you?" "Oh. Um. I was out." "Oh. Cool streak by the way." "What are you talking about?" "You're hair. It looks really cool." She got back to reading her book while I ran to the bathroom. She was right. I had multiple blue streaks in my hair. Why was this happening to me? I sprinkled some water on my face and my hair still had the streaks. "Are you okay, Kendra?" "Yeah yeah. I'm fine. I just need some fresh air." I ran outside. 'I just need to calm down.' I thought and dove into the water.
Chapter 2-The way of Kara
Kara's PoV
Ever since she got here, strange things have been happening. Small fires appear in my hands. Sometimes they're big, others are small. It doesn't even burn. I know I'm a red head but that doesn't mean that I should be turning into fire, right? Kendra's been acting odd too. Anyway, I was walking to library wearing some small gloves I found so I wouldn't catch any of the books on fire. Hopefully. Even though it was summer.
I picked up every single book about mythology and supernatural I could. The only thing I found was this strange story:
'During the first blue moon, sadness and fear ruled. But one day, a group of 4 came and brought happiness and joy. Each born from an element. One born of fire, one born of water, one born of earth, and one born of air. When they died, their souls went searching for the next incarnation of heroes. For centuries, they've searched and searched until they found them. One of sadness, one of rage, one of nature, and one of knowledge. No one knows who the next ones are. All that we know is this drawing from a prophet.'
It showed a picture of 5 people. One shadowy figure in the middle who looked like he had lightning shooting out of his eyes and hands. And 2 guys and 2 girls surrounding it with fire, water, air, and vines. 2 of the girls on the edge looked exactly like me and Kendra. One of the guys looked just like Jake. This doesn't mean anything, right? I continued reading.
'The 4 on the edge each represent a season also. Fire is Summer, Air is fall, earth is spring, and Water is winter.
I didn't really know what was going on because the rest of it was blank. I looked at my phone and it was 6:30. I put the book in my bag and head back to the home. So if I'm fire, then I just need to find the other three! That shouldn't be too hard. Right?
Meanwhile
Kendra's POV
So far, the spell was working. I was back in town and I checked my phone. It was 6:40. I started walking back to the orphanage. I wonder what Kara does when I'm gone? Probably stays in her room. Anyway, I walked into the room and saw Kara reading an old book. She quickly put it down. "Hey. " "hi. Um, how are you?" Kara said quickly. "I'm fine. Are you okay?" She seemed less perky than normal. "Yeah. I'm fine. Just a little tired. I'm gonna go get som fresh air." And she left. I knew she was hiding something and I know when someone's hiding something. I looked under her covers and found an old, dusty book. The title said 'The prophecy of Elements.' I looked at a random page and there was nothing. I flipped to the beginning, nothing. This entire book was blank. Except for one page. It had only one line. It read, 'Who are you?' I grabbed a pen and wrote down something. 'I'm Kendra Paige.' 'Where did you find me?' 'Under my friend's covers.' 'Who's your friend?' 'Kara Sanders.' This honestly wasn't the weirdest thing I've seen and done. 'Kara & Kendra. It's almost complete.' 'What's almost complete.' 'That's for you to find out.' And the book shut itself. "Wait!" Kara walked in. "Did you say something?" "No." She walked out. I reopened the book. 'Hello again.' 'Why can't you tell me?' I wrote down. 'Because the others will come.' 'What others?' 'Tomorrow. You will find out.' And the book shut itself again. "Well that was no help." I mumbled.
Kara's POV
This may sound stalkerish, but I was listening on the other side. She was looking through the book. But why was it blank for her? It told me everything but nothing for her. I walked inside without warning. "Ah ha! I knew it! You were reading my book!" "What?" She tried to hide the book. "I have no idea what your talking about." "This book." I uncovered the book. "Oh that book." "Uh yeah that book! Why were you reading it?" I could feel the fire starting to form in my hair. At least my hair was pulled back this time. "It looked interesting. I thought it might explain something. Never Mind. You wouldn't understand." She ran outside and jumped into the ocean. I couldn't see her. I didn't know what she was doing. I looked around. No one was there. Time to find a new power. I started running from the grass into the sand into the water. I can feel the water burning at my skin. I fell. The water now burning my skin as if I got a sunburn. I crawled out of the water and saw at least 3 burns in my skin. And there was steam coming from them. Great.
30 minutes later
I think I finally got it. I ran from grass into the sand and jumped over the shoreline. I was doing it. I was finally flying. I was actually doing it! I was flipping and getting higher and higher. When was somewhere over the middle of the beach, I looked back and saw a light trail. It reminded me of the shooting stars that would fall at night when I was little. I was enjoying my life for the first time in years. Hiding behind happiness. Now I have to find Kendra. I had a pretty good idea of where she might've gone. I started flying to the island. It was the most obvious place. Jake and I used to hang out there.
Anyway, I arrived at the island and tried to gently land my self without making any loud noise. I touched my feet to the ground but lost my balance and fell on my butt. "Well. It could've been worse." I mumbled. I got up and there was a ring of burnt sand around me. I ignored it and started looking for Kendra. It might take me all night.
Kendra's POV
I surfaced up in the moon pool of the island. Kara would never understand what I was going through. No one would. I started dozing off. It was peaceful. The sound of waves on the beach. I wonder why Kara got so suspicious about her book. But more importantly, why was it answering. Well it didn't give me answers but still. There was something odd going on and it had something to do with me.
These powers have never showed up before and haven't even been mentioned. So why are they showing up now? Why haven't they shown up before? But the bigger question is, why doesn't anyone else have them? I tried to use one of my new powers since I was alone. I got some water and tried to make snowflakes. Small, detailed snowflakes. Concentrating on every detail. Every corner, every point, every hole. When I finished, I was very satisfied. It was perfectly symmetrical. I was actually happy. Genuinely happy. Nothing bad had happen. I was holding my perfect snowflake, and Kara walks in. I was in such a surprise, I left my snowflake and just ducked under the water swimming, and hoping that she didn't she me.
Kara's POV
I've known this island since I was a little kid. Every rock, every tree, and no Kendra. I hope she's a right. If she's not in the woods then she's most likely in the mountain. I haven't been there since, who knows. I climbed on top of the rocks trying to cross the river when, I fell down a hole. My body spinning until I hit the bottom. I saw a light near by. I got up and walked towards it and then, I stopped. I saw something I wasn't supposed to see. I went to the side, hiding behind a wall. I peeked my head out and looked again, thinking I was seeing things. I wasn't. I could've sworn that was Kendra. With a tail. Making a snowflake in the middle of summer. I tried to carefully move to the other side hoping she wouldn't see me. I was wrong my foot slipped and she saw me. Ducking down under the water and swimming away. Well. Now I know where her hiding spot is. I looked around at the magnificence of it. The small area of water in the middle with rocks under the edge. I noticed on the ground that she left her snowflake.
I'm not the only one. I pick up the snowflake and put it inside a leaf before it melts in my hand. I sit down on the sandy rocks and slowly put my hand in the water. I see the vapour that rises before I touch it. When I do touch it, it burns. I feel as if I'm dying. Like the water is slowly killing me somehow. What should I expect. I have fire in my blood. But that moment. I wasn't that one girl who sat by herself wherever she goes, rejecting everyone who tries to get near her. I was that one girl, who found someone just like her. I don't think she knows that I have them too. I climb back to the surface of the island and fly my way back.
Kendra's POV
I was on the beach pacing back and forth hoping she didn't see me. But what if she did? She might call the authorities. Or try to kill me then sell me. Or ask me all of these questions. I thought as I held my head in horror. That's it. I'm done. I can't come back. I can't live here anymore. I have to leave.
Kara's POV
I crashed on the beach far from the boardwalk. I think I was about 3 miles away. I got myself up and started running as fast as I could. I felt my feet get hot. I was running faster than a cheetah. Leaving (yet another) trail of fire in my path. I arrived by the lifeguard tower in about 30 seconds flat. Cool. Alright. I guess it's time.
Kendra's POV
I was standing on the beach looking out to the water. Asking myself, do I really want to leave? I was quiet until someone touched my shoulder. "Ahh!" "It's okay. It's only me." said Kara. "Did you see anything?" She slowly nodded. "I knew it! You're probably gonna want to ask me questions or kill me." Kara shook her head quickly as soon as I said the second choice. "I have something to show you." She said in a calm voice. Kara took a leaf out of her pocket and unfolded it. Revealing my perfect snowflake that I made earlier. "You found it." I said as I removed the leaf from her hand. "Wasn't really that hard to find a snow flake on a beach. But that wasn't the only thing but we can't do it here. Or inside." "Why not inside?" "You'll see." She motioned for me to come under the old dock that no one goes too. "You ready?!" She asked in excitement. "I guess." She twisted her hand in a counter-clockwise direction while slowly turning to a fist. Then she slowly opens showing her palm. Now flaming with fire.
"I'm not alone." I whisper. "We're not alone." Kara said correcting my words from earlier. I had to hug her. I finally had a friend. I hugged her. And she hugged me back. "Ow." said Kara. I quickly backed away. "Fire remember? Water burns out fire." "I'll try my best not to kill you then." I said jokingly. She chuckled. We walked back to the orphanage talking about our powers.
The next morning we both got up early to head to the island. "You sure you don't need any help getting there?" Kendra said. "Yeah. I'll meet you there!" I said running up the beach. I saw Kendra dive off of the old dock as I was running down the beach and jumped over the shoreline to fly to the island. This was the best feeling ever. Feeling weightless as I watched Kendra below me swimming. Kendra turned around and looked above her to see me flying. She stopped swimming. "When did you learn to do that?!" "Last night. Now come on. We're almost there. We'll talk more there." I continued flying and Kendra continued swimming. When I was above the mountain on the island, I flew down the hole and almost landed on top of Kendra in the water but made a sharp turn and landed somewhere between the wall and the ground. Again, showing a burnt circle wherever I landed. "You okay?" asked Kendra as she got out of the water. Showing her tail. "So how does this thing work exactly? Transforming from person to fish." "First of all, I'm not a fish, I'm a mermaid. And second of all…" "wait, you mean like the mythical ones? Like sirens and goddesses and Ariel?" "Yes. And second of all, when I get wet I transform into this. And when I'm dry I turn back human." She said as she sat there waiting to get dry. "You need some help there?" I said as I made a small fire. "It would speed up the process." I kneeled down and made a small ball of fire and held it above her as steam rose.
A few seconds later, I backed away from her as her body turned into water and transformed back to normal. "Woah." I said. "You get used to it. Uh, Kara?" "Yeah." "Your hair, it's on fire." I grabbed a strand and looked at while Kendra looked as if she was gonna die. When I blew on it, the fire went away and half of my hair was blonde as the other stayed ginger. I smiled. "Cool. So what are we doing here exactly?" "Just privacy really. I don't know." "Should we head back?" "Yeah." A couple minutes later, we were back at the orphanage. "Can I ask you a question?" "Sure. I guess?" said Kara unsure if she should answer it. "What's with you and that book?" "What book?" I walked over to her bed and unveiled the book under the covers. "Oh. That book. Um, well, I found it at the library. And it had this prophecy about the four elements," she said as she opened the book. "And…there's nothing here. Why is there nothing here. When I first opened it, it was almost full of stories and pictures. Why is it different?" "Can you hand me a pen?" "Uh sure but what's that gotta do with any…are you gonna write in the book. Kendra you…can't." She said as I wrote 'Hello.' "Kendra I got this from a library." Said Kara. "Yet, you stole it." "Yeah but, never mind." 'Hello again, Kendra.' "Have you done this before?" "Yep." "Can I try something?" asked Kara. "Yeah sure." She took the pen and wrote: 'tell me the prophecy.' 'On a day of sadness and terror, 4 people will rise to protect and sacrifice. One was born of sadness, one of rage, one of nature, and one of knowledge. When the moment came, the 4 will reign. The 4 each represent a season also. Fire is Summer, Air is fall, earth is spring, and Water is winter.' "So if this is the prophecy, then there are two others, somewhere. And we each stand for a season, I guess. Fire being summer makes sense, but water being winter? I guess that explains the snowflake ability." I said. "So we just have to find Earth, and Air." "Yep." "Is there anything else in here to help us find them?" "Not that I know of." Kara flips through the rest of pages revealing nothing. "Maybe something will come up tomorrow." She closed the book and placed it in the drawer of the nightstand by her bed. After we ate dinner at a nearby diner, we went to bed hoping that we will have more information in the morning.
The next day, Kara and I just spent most of the day inside or on the beach. Playing with our powers that we now can control. "I wonder what it's gonna be like." I said. "What." said Kara. "When we find the other two. What our lives will be like. Until we discovered our powers, our lives will no longer be normal. Nothing will be normal for us anymore." "Well that was a deep and meaningful conversation. I'm gonna head out for a bit. Need anything?" "No. Oh and remember no powers." "Alright well back in a minute."
Kara's POV
I walked past the store into an alley. I grabbed a stick and blew on it. "Let there be light." I walked down and heard rustling. "Hello?" No one answered. I heard it again. "Alright I've had enough who is it. Kendra is that you?" The flame blew out but there was no breeze. I walked to the end of the alley. "Hello?" I was flung back. The trash cans fell down and my back hit the brick wall. I saw feathers flying around and a pair of wings with a body. And then everything went black.
"Hi. I don't have much time but I need to tell you something." Said the voice that sounded to be male. "Who are you? I don't remember waking up." I said. "You didn't. You blacked out and have a concussion. You're in a coma state now. So far you've been out for about 3 hours." "3 hours! Kendra's probably really worried." "It's okay. You're at home in bed. Kendra's been trying to get you up for an hour and a half. Now, I don't have much time so I need to tell you that it's coming." "It? What's 'it'?" "That's all it says. It." "All what says?! What's 'it'?!" "The connection's breaking. All I can you is, you need to find the others quick. It's coming and you need to be prepared." "Well it would help if I knew the other 2." "I don't know who they are but they already have their powers. Look for behaviour changes or new talents. Just find the-" "Find what?!" I yelled in frustration. "Kara? Kara?!" "Kendra? Kendra! I can't wake up. Help me! Help me!" I started sobbing. "Help…me! Let me out! Let…me…out!!" As soon as I said 'out'. Fire surrounded me the dark abyss filling with smoke. I heard another voice. "Help. Someone please help me. I'm trapped!" It stopped. Then there were screams. Screaming everywhere. There was no body. I couldn't find any one. The screams kept getting louder. And then, it stopped. Complete silence. The fire and smoke disappeared. And I saw a door with a bright light behind it. I walked towards it. The door slowly opening as I got closer. It showed a hotel hallway. Red carpet, red walls, and wooden doors with golden door knobs. I slowly put my hand inside and something started pulling me in. I grabbed the door swinging back and forth. I heard the screaming again. "Just leave me alone!" I yelled as the door closed shut. I couldn't breathe. I woke up on the floor. I gasped for air. I got up. The voice came back. "This is what was happening while you were out." "You! You didn't help me at all!" "Shh. Just watch." I saw Kendra playing with a cup of water. Doing the cup song with water and making small bubbles with the water. One of the bubbles dropped on her. "Not again." She said in frustration. I dropped to the floor and was back in the alley. "What's happening?" "You're dying. This is what happens. You're witnessing your own demise." Maybe I could stop this. I walked up to my past self holding the torch. "Kara. Get out of here. I don't have time to explain just leave!" She turned around and walked through me. The flame went out. I'm a ghost. She can't hear me. I'm truly watching my own death. "Hello?" She said. Past me flew against the brick wall, my head bleeding. The trash cans falling down and I saw what flew away. It looked like a girl with white wings with parts of pale blue. "An angel killed me?" "Sadly yes. I've got to go. My time has run out. Goodbye." "Wait!" I woke up with no air in my lungs. I did a huge inhale and saw I was in my room. I was in my bed, with Kendra beside me with a surprised look on her face. "Kara?" She said. "I'm alive." I said looking at my hands. "I'm alive." I started hugging Kendra. "I'm alive! I can feel, I can touch. I'm alive!" "Are you okay Kara? You're acting liked you died." "I did."
Kara's POV
"What do you mean you 'died'." "I died. I had a dream. So when I was out, I walked in the alley by the store. I picked up a stick and lit it-" "Kara! Powers outside! Someone could've seen!" "I think someone did. There was a noise behind the trash cans and next thing I knew, I was thrown against a wall blacking out." "So that's why you were in the alley." "Yes. Wait, how did you know I was in an alley. How did I get in bed?" "You were out longer than I thought so I went to see if you were okay. You were bleeding pretty badly." I touch the bandage around my head. "So anyway, I heard a voice. He kept saying: 'it's coming'. And his voice disappeared. Then I heard your voice. Then, fire surrounded me and I heard screaming. Then there was silence and a door appeared. I walked inside then I woke up on the floor watching my 'death'. Turns out, an angel killed me. Then I woke up here." "That's a lot to take in." "I know." "Maybe we should talk about this more tomorrow. It's late." I look at the clock. 11:38pm. "I agree." We get into our beds and say goodnight.
Chapter 3-Wind
The next morning, we stayed in town. We didn't have full control of our powers yet but we had enough. Since the original owner of the orphanage dumped us, we made it our home.
