Onward Review

A member of the Flix406 team recently saw Onward. Here is the review:

Onward is written and directed by Dan Scanlon. It is the most recent animated-feature film released by both Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. The voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Octavia Spencer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Ali Wong.

Onward is the tale of two brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot. They are two elves who live in a world where magical beings exist. The problem is that the sense of “magic” has disappeared as time has come into the modern age.

Ian and Barley must go on a quest to find what little is left of that old magic. If they find it, they will be able to spend one more day with the person they’ve both been longing to see, their father.

The first highlight of the film was the animation. As usual, Pixar knows how to create a beautiful piece of art that is visually stunning and appealing to look at.

Second, the voice cast is phenomenal! Christ Pratt and Tom Holland really do an amazing job of bringing life and emotion to their characters. These two have worked together in other projects, and it was easy to see how good of chemistry they have.

Lastly, the story is just so pure and full of heart. The story is set in a world of magical beings and mythical tales. So, you’re wondering if this movie includes magical quests, monsters, and actual magic right? Well don’t worry, the answer is yes. All of the above.

With this world of magic, the beginning of the movie shows how it has slipped away. Replacing it is the modern world that is similar to our own. This is showing that we as a society have lost touch with our magical sense of wonder and adventure that we once had. This is a powerful message and one that is all too true.

Onward of course touches on important family values as well. It teaches us that while you thought something was missing in your life, you actually had a better version of it right in front of you. This part of the film is what will have you shedding tears right into your popcorn bucket. Or into your box of candy that you snuck into the theater.

This movie is a feel good tale that aims for delivering a different message in a different way. The catch is that you need to see the movie to understand what that message is and how it’s being delivered.

Onward is a wonderful movie that I think most people would really enjoy watching. The heart and adventure it brings out will put a big smile on your face that will be hard to take off (: The Flix406 team definitely recommends you take an adventure to the theater and see Onward!
