Butterflies and the story of Evi (The Magic in a Wish).
Once a pone a time there was a woman named Ella who had two sons named Holden and Otto. They were so handsome and so smart that anyone who met them would tell the woman how handsome and smart they were. Though the woman loved to hear this about them and she did love her sons very much. She still seemed to have a void in her heart, for she longed for another child, a little girl.
The woman wanted a little girl in hopes she would be able to teach her all the wonderful things she learned and did with her mother growing up; like sewing and dancing, and creating beautiful treats to enjoy at after noon tea. Alas she was afraid to try for another child for fear of having another boy.
One day after the boys had left with their father to go hunting in the woods and she had done all the chores. She decided to go into the garden and sit. As she admired the lilies and the Roman chamomile flowers she heard a small little voice, the tiniest of voices. This tiny little voice whispered, "make a wish!"
Ella looked around and there was no one there. Moments later she heard the voice again, "there, the blue catapiller!" Again the woman looked around the garden and couldn't find anyone or anything to go with the little voice. She had heard of elfin people and the fae but not ones that grant wishes. There were mostly stories of them causing mischief and stealing children. Goodness, she hoped it wasn't one of them.
After a while when she though that the voice was gone she was about to go back in to her home. She Heard a tiny scuffle on a nearby leaf. It was the catapiller the little voice had talked about. Beautiful blue with yellow eyes like yellow Citrine. She looked at this beautiful creature on the leaf and thought about what the small voice had said. 'I wonder if it's true, but it can't be'. "What if it is?", said the small voice she had heard before. "Make a wish, it's not going to hurt, just try".
Ella closed her eyes and thought to her self, 'what's it going to hurt'. So she took a deep breath and with all of her heart and soul she wished for the one and only thing she had always wanted. After she opened her eyes the catapiller was gone. The woman got up and went back to her home where her husband and both her sons would be waiting.
Days went bye and Ella had almost forgotten about the wish. Until one day in the garden while weeding she noticed a chrysalis attached to the stem of a star lilly that had just bloomed. Ella wondered if it was the catapiller from before, the one with the beautiful blue, with the yellow citrine eyes.
Ella never mentioned to her husband or her sons about her wish in the garden. She thought they might think she was rather silly, losing her mind even. So she just left the chrysalis alone and continued to enjoy the rest of the garden.
The garden was one of Ella's favorite places to go especially after cleaning and tending to the needs of her family. It was her sanctuary. Isaac planted it for her just before they were married. They were always very happy and a very loving couple.
Some more time went bye and Ella had almost forgotten about her wish. Until one day she was, again out in her garden enjoying her lilies and chamomile and just daydreaming. She heard a noise almost like a cooing sound, almost like a baby.
She got up from her spot and started searching around for the sound. Low and behold just in a group of lilies lay a small baby girl with hazel eyes and beautiful skin. She was lying on top of what looked like a cacoon broken beneath her, naked as could be. Ella gasped, "oh dear where did you come from we must get you inside". She picked up the baby girl and wrapped her in her apron and went straight to the house.
Once In the house she went straight to her sons room to dig out some old baby clothes and a blanket just her size. Before dressing the child the woman thought it might be a good idea to bath her. She pulled out the wash bucket and filled it with water and proceeded to give the new baby a bath. After the bath she went back into her sons trunk and rummaged through it for an old bottle since new babies obviously need to eat and have clothes and shelter, ect.
Not once did she stop and think where the child came from or how it came to her garden. She just thought how she needed to provide and care for this new baby girl. It's a good thing she was raised to be frugal, her mother taught her this trick because you never know when you may fall on hardships. It also came in handy since she had two boys and you never know she may be a grandmother some day.
After all was said and done the baby had her bath and some clothes, a full belly and then Ella was able to put her down to nap. Her husband finally came home from the village with the boys. As he walked through the door and noticed all the old baby stuff out he asked, "what is all this out for, are we having another child?"
Ella explained what happened in the garden and even told him about her wish and the voice. Isaac's reaction was not what she expected, "we should find the parents to this child, what if they miss her?"The woman knew in her heart and soul that the child did not belong to any one, well anyone human at least. However she did agree to try and find the child's mother and father if there was one but for now she would call the baby girl Evilyn, just until the parents were found.
