Diva On Wheelz

Money, Money, Money

I don't know if anyone's noticed but there's definitely an increase in TV programmes that actively promote middle to upper-class culture and wealth. This past month alone ITV have treated us to, 'Aspreys: By Royal Appointment' along with, 'Britain's Poshest Nannies'. Not forgetting we already have countless property and real estate programmes such as the, 'Escape To.....' series.

I for once find this a deeply disturbing trend. Just whose agenda are the media ramming down our collective throats? Surely during these austerity years when most poor and vulnerable people are trying desperately to keep the wolf from the door this is wholly inappropriate and at worst utterly vulgar?

To say these sort of shows are merely escapism and aspirational is like rubbing salt into open wounds. I find them revolting, venal and above all obscene given the state of society at present. My overall concern is that they're forcing a culture and lifestyle that is completely beyond the means of most people. Not to mention insidiously brainwashing us to focus on the material and the superficial.

Worshipping elitism and capitalism has sadly become part of the course. We've had a diet of it for almost 40 years and unfortunately the hideous doctrine has become firmly entrenched within the mindset of society.

We need to wake up and question why the media are showing these programmes. Why are there none to act as a counter-argument? Those looking at working-class culture in a positive way instead of portraying us all as welfare scroungers?

Maybe it's because the media are controlled by the establishment. We're merely spectators to a list of shows that don't rock the boat. We may as well be passive lab rats in their evil hands that manipulate us from behind the TV screen. They ultimately decide what we watch and perhaps in more sinister terms, what we aren't allowed to watch.

In an age when the top 10% of households holds over 40% of the wealth in the UK, there's a perversion of democracy right at the heart of Governmental economic policy. This creates not only a desperately un-equal and un-just society but also one that the cancer of capitalism is feeding off to the detriment of those most poor and vulnerable.

They say that money is the route of all evil. That statement is such a damning truism in the cold light of day.
