Werdsmith

Novel

In Novel Mode, Werdsmith makes your novel feel real from the first word. There are zero formatting buttons — instead, Ghostwriter formats your work for you as you write, adding chapter numbers, titles, line indents and breaks.

That means instead of wasting your creative energy on formatting, you can focus on what matters: writing.

Here’s how it works:

Chapters

All you have to do to start a new chapter is type "Chapter" on a blank line.

On the next line, you can optionally write a title for your chapter, or skip that line to leave the title blank.

Ghostwriter manages your chapters for you, adding the chapter number and styling the headings automatically. The numbers will appear when you finish editing.

Chapter
The Beginning

The next time you type "Chapter", Ghostwriter will re-calculate all your chapter titles so that the numbers are in order. You can freely add and remove chapters without having to re-number all your titles.

Ghostwriter recognizes German, French, Spanish and Portuguese chapter titles.

Kapitel

Chapitre

Capítulo

If you want to set a specific number, just type it manually.

Chapter 7

You can also use Roman numerals for chapters. Just make sure to follow the numeral with a period ("."):

I.
THE BEGINNING

Don't worry, you won't have to remember the Roman numerals. Ghostwriter will prompt you with a button to add them automatically as you type.

Subchapters

You can start a line with a hash (#) to create a subchapter. Make sure to leave a space after the hash.

# The Next Day

Ghostwriter will also recognize "Prologue" or "Epilogue" as subchapters.

Prologue
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Epilogue
It didn't actually turn out too bad.

Chapter Breaks

Chapter breaks are common in novels and stories to indicate that some time has passed or that the perspective has shifted to a different character. As you type, Ghostwriter will prompt you to add a chapter break if it makes sense to.

Prose

The rest of your prose will be formatted in a traditional novel style, with a serif font, indented lines and justified text.

Alex woke up to the sound of the door.
"Who’s there?" she yelled.
There was no reply.

You can add bold, italics and hidden notes to your text by selecting a word (or group of words) and choosing a formatting option.

Instead of confusing formatting that you can't see, we add asterisks around the highlighted words, so you can easily change the formatting as you write.

The easiest way to use the formatting buttons is to highlight a word and press "bold" or "italics". You can also type the asterisks manually.

The asterisks are hidden when you finish editing, and they aren't shown to your readers if you share your project.

This is some *italic text*.
And here is some **bold** text!

Hidden Notes

To write a note-to-self, surround your text in curly brackets. These notes will be hidden from your readers.

The silence was deafening {Maybe a bit clichéd?}
